Safety Tips: Space Heaters

December 7th, 2010

Space heaters have become very popular with many homeowners as a way to supplement heat in their homes. If there is a room in the home that doesn’t receive adequate heating or if the furnace unexpectedly breaks down, space heaters are an economical way to provide heating in the home. However, many homeowners forget that these devices can also be very dangerous if not handled properly. They are responsible for thousands of home fires every year, and they account for hundreds of deaths and injuries due to fire, burns, and carbon monoxide poisoning annually. To keep your family safe, there are certain precautions you must take when using your space heater. These include:

  • Combustion Heaters: Most homes use electric heaters, but if you are going to use a gas, oil, or kerosene heater, you need to take special precaution. These units need to be vented properly to the outdoors. Without proper ventilation, they will release large amounts of carbon monoxide into the breathing air of the home. These units should be maintained yearly by a professional, and the homeowner should also pay close attention to and follow the guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
  • Space Heater Placement: Make sure that the space heater has plenty of space. Keep combustible materials well out of the way, and make sure that it is also placed out of the way of foot traffic in the home.
  • The Space Heater Cord: Sometimes the best place to put the heater is too far from an outlet to reach with just the cord attached to the heater. If you are going to use an extension cord, make sure that is can handle to extra load that the space heater requires. Also, remember that space heater cords come with a grounding prong that will also have to fit into the extension cord. Never run a cord under a rug or carpet, and if the cord is frayed, replace the space heater because this is a major fire hazard.
  • Operating the Heater: When in use, the space heater should be under constant supervision. If you are leaving the room or the home, make sure that the heater is shut down and unplugged. Also, never fall asleep with a space heater running because it may start a fire in the middle of the night.
  • Warn Children of Danger: It is important to keep children and pets away from the heater because of the potential for burns. Tell children to keep their distance, and never leave a child unattended in a room with a space heater that is running.
  • Install Fire Extinguishers and Detectors: Fire/smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers are all must haves in a home that frequently uses a space heater. Accidents do happen, so it is always best to be prepared.

By following these tips strictly and adhering to the manufacturer’s instructions, you will greatly reduce any dangers associated with space heater use. Keep your family safe and comfortable this winter!
