This is always a troubling problem. What can you do to make sure your not calling out and paying a technician for a service visit for something frivolous?
First thing you should do is check the breaker in your main electrical panel. If your breaker moves a little bit when you touch it, it is probably tripped and needs to be reset. You can reset it by moving it to the off position and then push it to the on position in one motion.
If it is not tripped then go to the furnace and look at the service switch on the side of your furnace. It should resemble a normal light switch. If it is in the off position just turn it to the on position.
If the breaker and the service switch are ok, then go to your thermostat. Check to make sure you have it in the heat mode. If you have a programmable thermostat then push the hold button and turn the temperature higher then the room temperature display. If you have non-programmable thermostat then raise the temperature a 3 or 4 degrees above the room temperature.
If after all that your furnace still doesn’t turn on then you better call for a service technician to check your furnace out, and even if you do get it running you should have your furnace and air conditioner serviced every year to prevent big service expenses and keep your equipment running as efficiently as possible. It will save you money and your equipment will last longer and will also help save our environment.
