What is that Gurgling Noise?

August 31st, 2011

Every now and then we get a service call from a customer stating that the furnace is gurgling. Strange but true, furnaces do make gurgling noises. When the condensation drain becomes partially or even completely blocked, a gurgling noise can sometimes be heard. Where is the water coming from that drains through this line? All furnaces rated above 90% AFUE produce condensation during the heat cycle. It is a natural by product of cooling combustion fumes. The other sources of water are the whole house humidifier as well as the air conditioner. Large amounts of condensation may be produced by the air conditioner, especially on very hot days.

Damage Caused by Condensation Leaks

Combustion condensation, air conditioner condensation and humidifier run off all drain into a condensate pump or a floor drain. These lines can become slow or blocked if the drain line is not cleaned periodically. The gurgling noise is a nuisance but a condensation leak because of a slow or blocked drain can be expensive. Water damage from a small condensation drain leak has ruined more than one hardwood floor in the past. Problems like this generally go unnoticed until it’s too late. After a floor starts to buckle or carpet starts to smell hundreds of dollars of damage has all ready been done. Let’s not forget if this condensation leaks or backs up into your furnace it can cause a catastrophic failure of the control board, motor, gas valve or any of the other electrical components it comes in contact with. » Read more: What is that Gurgling Noise?

An Arrow in the A/C

August 29th, 2011

I have thirty five years experience repairing furnaces and air conditioners, and I had thought I had seen it all. However, this was the first time I saw an air conditioning condenser unit with a hunting arrow sticking out of it. Over the years I have seen air conditioners hit by cars, lawn motors and the occasional go carts/mini bikes, but I have never seen an air conditioner with a hunting arrow in it.

A Frantic Phone Call

From what I could gather from our frantic phone call, the customer said he left for work at 7am and returned home at 5 pm. His house was 89 degrees when he got home.  From that point everything got a little fuzzy. He said something about an arrow in his air conditioner and that his neighbor killed it. Deer season was coming up, but I really didn’t know what he was talking about. He was defiantly distraught, and his neighbors target practice was the cause. » Read more: An Arrow in the A/C

Imbalanced Blower Motors

August 24th, 2011

Furnaces and air conditioners can make many different noises, but when the source of the noise is your furnace, odds are the blower motor is having a problem. This fan is probably the one part of your HVAC system that is worked the hardest and longest. Whether you are using the air conditioner or the furnace, the blower motor is up and running pushing air throughout the home. The slightest disturbance in the rotation of this blower can devastate the part and require replacement.

Costly Part Replacement

What kind of things can disturb your blower motor? Well, years of caked on particles and small pieces of debris that find their way into the blower compartment are enough to throw the blower off balance. These find their way to the blower through your ducts, and more often then not, the problem is caused by a lack of maintenance to the HVAC system. The slightest imbalance will cause the part of burn out much earlier than it would if it were balanced, and trust us, you don’t want to replace that blower motor more than necessary. » Read more: Imbalanced Blower Motors

Outrageous Electric Bills!

August 15th, 2011

The heat wave is over but some people are still hot under the collar. Why? They just got the electric bills. More than one couple is sitting there drinking their morning coffee and blaming each other for the outrageous electric bill that just came in the mail. In most cases it wasn’t because they had their thermostat set too low it’s because they have problems with the efficiency of their air conditioner or their home isn’t insulated correctly.

How Much are You Wasting?

These two simple problems that no one seems to see until we get extremes in weather will causes high electric bills and homes that are uncomfortable in the late afternoon. This wake-up call shouldn’t be ignored. If your air conditioner is using that much electricity in extreme weather, how much is it wasting in moderate weather? » Read more: Outrageous Electric Bills!

“Do it Yourself” Air Conditioner Damage

August 10th, 2011

There is nothing wrong with doing home repair jobs on your own, but if you don’t know what you are doing, you could end up with a bigger problem that you had before. Many homeowners are finding out the hard way this summer that certain “do it yourself” air conditioner repairs should have been left to the pros. One of these repairs in particular involves the air conditioner’s coil and years of neglected maintenance.

Clogged Coils

Leaving the air conditioner without a proper cleaning for years and years will eventually lead to problems with the cooling in your home. Most homeowners notice that the air conditioner just isn’t quite keeping up with the heat, and will contact an HVAC company to investigate the issue. Lack of maintenance can cause many issues, but a common one is a dirty coil. The coil in your air conditioner’s condenser is responsible for removing heat from the air that will be circulated through your home. When this coil becomes laden with dirt and debris buildup, it can’t absorb heat from the air as easily and will therefore not allow the home to cool down as efficiently. » Read more: “Do it Yourself” Air Conditioner Damage

An Emphasis on Noise Reduction

August 8th, 2011

When looking for a new air conditioner, many homeowners focus on the obvious first. Energy efficiency and cost are the top two concerns on the buyers mind, but once you have narrowed down your choices in these categories, you will probably still have a few different systems to choose from. How will you choose? Well, we suggest you take a look at the sound levels produced by each of the systems on your list of choices. Excessive noise from the air conditioner condenser has become something that many of us simply tolerate. However, with the technology available today, you don’t have to put up with a noisy air conditioner any more!

The Lennox XC 21

To better explain how technology has changed to make air conditioners quieter, we searched for a unit that was virtually silent. We found the Lennox XC21. This beefed up air conditioning system offers the buyer a 21.00 SEER rating and the high return you will receive on this purchase every month in the form of energy savings will defiantly make up for the extra cost. This unit wasn’t all energy efficiency and savings though. It also had many perks that contributed to its ability to operate quietly. » Read more: An Emphasis on Noise Reduction

High Efficiency Air Conditioners Offer Worthwhile Savings

July 27th, 2011

I was surprised the other day by how many of the highest efficiency air conditioners HVAC contractors are keeping in stock. Usually they seem to stock a few of each size and model, and more often than not, many companies will carry lower efficiency units in bulk. This is due to the fact that, in the past, many homeowners would only want to purchase the bare minimum in energy efficiency. They didn’t care about long term savings, and the initial out of pocket cost was more important than the potential for future savings.

Going Green Despite the Economy

Today, things are different. I was surprised to find out that more customers are “going green” than in years past. I know the economy isn’t healthy, so why would people want to spend extra to go green? I guess the answer has to be the rising cost of utility bills. Utility costs are driving the high efficiency air conditioner and furnace market to an all time record high. » Read more: High Efficiency Air Conditioners Offer Worthwhile Savings

Heat Wave Problems: Overheating the Attic

July 25th, 2011

During the high 70 and mid 80 degree days, many of us can easily ignore temperature differences throughout the home. It isn’t until we get a week long string of 90 to 100 degree days that the temperature difference becomes terribly noticeable. Many people that have this problem notice a difference between the temperature on the main level of the home and the upstairs. Since the upstairs is where most of us sleep, a 95 degree bedroom can be very difficult to sleep in. Most automatically jump to the conclusion that the air conditioner is to blame, but we would challenge you to make one other check during this hot week before you call your HVAC technician.

Feel the Ceiling!

Feel the ceiling! Yes, it sounds crazy, but get out a ladder, if you have to, and touch the ceiling that makes a barrier between your upstairs rooms and the attic. How does it feel? Odds are its pretty warm, or maybe even hot! Poke your head up in your attic and we are sure that our suspicions will be confirmed. You attic is gathering loads of hot air during this heat wave, and you don’t have the insulation or the ventilation needed to keep it from seeping into the floors below. » Read more: Heat Wave Problems: Overheating the Attic

Condensation Leaks

July 20th, 2011

Summer is characterized by two things: heat and humidity. Both are uncomfortable, but having a humid home is simply unbearable at times. Luckily, air conditioning systems are designed to remove both humidity and heat from the interior of your home. The system will condense the moisture in the air into water to be collected by a draining system. Once the moisture is gone, the air in the home will start to feel cooler. Without this capability, air conditioners would offer much less comfort, but if we do not take special care of this component of our air conditioning systems, we could find ourselves with a couple major problems on our hands.

Your Condensation Drain System

After the water vapor in the air is changed to liquid form, it travels to a condensation drain pan to be collected and then drained through the actual condensation drain located near the air conditioner on the inside of the home. You may also have a drain line or pipe that feeds directly to the drain. If any portion of this system becomes clogged, it will appear as though the air conditioner is leaking. » Read more: Condensation Leaks

What’s All this Talk about SEER Ratings?

July 18th, 2011

SEER ratings seem to be the deciding factor these days when it comes to replacing the air conditioning system, but few actually understand the concept of this energy efficiency rating system. So, I’ve been surfing the web to see what everyone was saying about SEER ratings, and I found that most people are talking a lot about the differences between a 10 SEER and 13 SEER air conditioners. What they don’t explain, at least to my satisfaction is what that means as far as how much you will save per year in the Chicagoland area.

Calculating Watts Per Hour

First off, a 10 SEER air conditioner gives you 10 BTU’s of cooling per watt hour of electricity. 13 SEER air conditioners would give you 13 BTU’s per watt hour. What does that mean? Basically, if you have a 3 ton air conditioner rated at 36,000BTU, it is assumed that at a 10 SEER this unit will use 3,600 watts in an hour. This would mean that a 13 SEER AC at 36,000 BTU would use about 2,770 watts in an hour. That would equal 830 watts of electricity you are saving per hour of run time. Its all a bit technical, but the difference between the watts use per hour between each unit determines how much you could save. » Read more: What’s All this Talk about SEER Ratings?
