Cracked Heat Exchanger

Cracks in your Heat Exchanger?

I recently got a phone call from a friend who was told his heat exchanger was cracked in his furnace and it was leaking carbon monoxide into his home.

The technician told him he should replace the furnace, due to its age of 11 years old and not being sized correctly. I asked him if the technician was certified by the Heat Exchanger Experts.

He called the technician and who said he was not certified but had been doing it a long time and new what he was doing. I told him to get a second opinion and call a qualified company that had technicians that are certified with the Heat Exchanger Experts.

Most of your certified HVAC companies offer a small fee (around $250 to $400) to pull the heat exchanger out and inspect it for cracks or flaws. This is a small price to pay for piece of mind for you and your family, and if you end up purchasing a new furnace they usually apply the fee toward the purchase price of the new furnace.

My recommendation is to get your furnace heat exchanger inspected. Carbon monoxide is odorless and is the biggest silent killer during the heating season. Carbon monoxide detectors are a great addition, but you can eliminate the risk by having your furnaces heat exchange inspected. Some furnaces will have a failed heat exchanger the first year they are installed. Sizing the furnace incorrectly is the biggest problem with failed heat exchangers.

That time of year again

October 22nd, 2009

Well, it appears we are off and running into the heating side of things this fall.  I am finding it interesting what various web sites are posting, one common thread appears to be consumer rights which seams right enough.

Not overly familiar with there site however wanted to bring it up as it seems to have some interesting content, though I have not been able to get a hold of the webmin over there to see what direction they are headed in.  You can check it out, there site is called 24hr Furnace repair and is discussing consumer rights in that particular article.  On a related topic the Four Seasons Resource center is also doing a post on consumer rights.  This seems to be a site off of the Four Seasons company site focused on general information.  So getting a bit more crowded here but happy people are posting more good information related to heating and especially your rights as a consumer.

News on heat exchangers

October 12th, 2009

This topic I got from an area HVAC Company’s web site and I wanted to give our experts here an opportunity to review and comment on Heat Exchanger Experts.  You can find there article on the topic here.

  • Have you heard of heat exchange testing or certified heat exchanger experts?
  • Is this…
    • a concern to you guys
    • training you do
    • training you wish you could get
    • why?
  • Is there anything consumers should ask when scheduling with there HVAC company this winter and fall?

I could see a lot of companies trying to write something like this off if they don’t have it or stressing how important it is if they do the training.  So what should customers think and why?  If any of our writing experts want to tackle this topic I will link it in as you get it up.  Other wise, if your int the field and have thoughts, go ahead and post some comments on it so we can jump start things.
