Freon Fanatics!

June 27th, 2011

I had a customer tell me he needed Freon is his air conditioner to make it cool better. I of course told him I would check out the whole system and let him know why it wasn’t cooling to his satisfaction. Since he was very insistent about checking the Freon levels, I made a point the run a check right off the bat. The readings were completely normal, and the unit did not need Freon. For some reason, that is not what this customer wanted to hear.

Air Conditioners Should Not Leak!

The problem we run into is that some customers think they need a pound of Freon every year in order to make their unit will run right. The fact is that, since the EPA laws went into affect in the early 90’s, air conditioners have to be manufactured not to leak. IT’S THE LAW. Granted some systems do develop leaks, but I think I would question a service technician that wanted to sell you Freon every year instead of finding and fixing the leak. Something just doesn’t sound right. » Read more: Freon Fanatics!

Winter A/C Installation and Summer Preparedness

April 20th, 2011

Over the past winter season, thousands of homeowners took advantage of some amazing deals that were being offered on air conditioners and furnaces. Whether you had to replace the furnace and air conditioner because of a breakdown or if you simply upgraded to take advantage of last year’s tax credits, you need to have your air conditioner looked at this spring by a professional. Refrigerant is the substance that allows your air conditioner to replace the hot air inside your home with cool air during the summer. This substance is pressurized in your air conditioner’s coils, and can leak out easily when disturbed by the installation of a furnace. By replacing just the furnace in your home, there is a point in the installation process where the refrigerant in the air conditioner is able to escape. » Read more: Winter A/C Installation and Summer Preparedness

R-22 and R410A: What You Need to Know About Refrigerant

August 27th, 2010

Refrigerant, or Freon, is the substance that your air conditioning unit uses to provide cooling in your home. An air conditioner is a closed system, so adding refrigerant to your unit should be a onetime thing. However, if your unit springs a leak, you may want to know a little more about the type of Freon your unit uses before you decide on a costly repair.

The Old Standard

Air conditioning units used to use a compound called CFC’s or chlorofluorocarbons. This is a combination of carbon, fluorine, and chlorine atoms that when put together create a compound that is a destroyer of the ozone.  These types of compounds have been banned by the EPA since 1996, and therefore have pretty much disappeared from the market. » Read more: R-22 and R410A: What You Need to Know About Refrigerant
